the dictionary definition of "half pipe" is "A long half-cylindrical shape in the snow which is several hundred feet long and anywhere from 30-60 feet wide. Boarders zig-zag their way down it doing tricks." |
There are two types of half pipes. The first one is named how it is, an above ground half pipe. that, of course, is built above ground. An above ground half pipe is easier to build than any other half pipe. That design requires much less thought, planning, maitainence, and money. The only problem with an above ground half pipe is that you need to start all over the next year.
This one on your left is an example of an above ground half pipe. |

The second type of half pipe is also called how it is, the below ground half pipe, because it is below ground, and the bottom is dug out of the ground. The below ground half pipe is nearly the opposite of the above ground half pipe. The below ground half pipe requires a little more maintenence, money, and thought than the above ground half pipes, but the below ground half pipes will not have to be rebuilt each year. Taking care of a half pipe is not easy, because you must maintain it through however long you want it for, which will take many hours per week of maintenence. someone must go over the base of the half pipe with a shovel, and collect all the bad snow, and get rid of the bad edges that boarders can get caught on. |
